E-WASTE DAY: THE CHALLENGE OF WEEE

Electronic waste poses an environmental and resource management problem that goes beyond its proper collection and recycling.
The linear model of producing, using and discarding leads to the loss of materials, the consumption of new resources and the generation of waste that could be avoided or reduced through appropriate strategies for prevention, reuse and recovery.
In the printing consumables sector, this challenge is also evident. Remanufacturing and reuse can help preserve the value of materials and extend the useful life of products, provided they are carried out with guarantees of quality, safety, traceability and regulatory compliance.
However, the potential of the circular economy can only be realised when appropriate processes and technically viable alternatives are in place. It is not enough for a product to be marketed as sustainable: its characteristics must be assessed and the reality behind that claim verified.
On International E-Waste Day, 14 October, it is worth remembering that reducing the impact of electronic waste requires informed decisions throughout the entire product life cycle.
